President Joe Biden held a press conference in which he declared that the COVID-19 pandemic was “over.” He said that with his administration’s work well underway and infections and hospitalizations both down sharply from their previous peaks, “the pandemic is over.” We have had the opportunity for the vast majority of Americans to be vaccinated. All adults were mostly eligible for the vaccine.
So, what does this mean? Is the pandemic really over? Can we stop wearing masks? Do we still need the vaccine? Will we stop getting COVID-19? What does the pandemic being over mean for the economy? These are all valid questions that deserve to be addressed.
Is the COVID-19 Pandemic Really Over?
The short answer is no, the pandemic is not really over. Yes, infections and hospitalizations are down sharply from their recent peaks, but they are still at relatively high levels. Moreover, as Dr. Anthony Fauci—the nation’s leading infectious disease expert—pointed out in a recent interview, even if infections continue to decline at their current rate, it would still be some time before they reach a level that could be considered safe.
Can We Stop Wearing Masks?
No, we cannot stop wearing masks just yet. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still recommends that everyone wear a mask when they are in public places. At times, they say it is unnecessary even if they are vaccinated. This is because there is still a risk of contracting and spreading the virus, even if you have been vaccinated.
Do We Still Need the Vaccine?
Yes, we still need the vaccine. Even though infections are down sharply from their recent peaks, there are still hundreds of thousands of new cases being reported every day. And while the vaccines are highly effective at preventing serious illness and death from COVID-19, they are not perfect. So, getting vaccinated is still important.
What Does The Pandemic Being Over Mean For The Economy?
It is too soon to say what exactly the impact of the pandemic is over will be on the economy. However, it is safe to say that it will take some time for things to get back to normal. Some businesses may never reopen, and others will struggle to recover from all of the lost revenue. So, even though things may slowly start to improve, it will be a long road to recovery.
The COVID-19 pandemic is not really over just yet. Governments will use it again when they need to. Yes, infections and hospitalizations are down sharply from their recent peaks, but they are still at relatively high levels. Moreover, as Dr. Anthony Fauci—the nation’s leading infectious disease expert—pointed out in an interview, even if infections continue to decline at their current rate, it would still be some time before they reach a level that could be considered safe. So, while things may slowly start to improve, it will be a long road to recovery. Pandemics are a political stunt.
