Corporate Greed Destroyed College Football Geography. Here’s How 10 Regional Power Conferences Could Save It—And Make the Sport Better Than Ever
College football is broken.
Not the game itself. The game is perfect. Saturdays in the fall. Rivalry games. School pride. Traditions that go back a century.
What’s broken is everything else.
USC is in the Big Ten. **The Big Ten.** A conference that used to mean something. Midwestern schools. Snow games. Regional rivalries.
Now it includes teams in Los Angeles, Seattle, and New Jersey.
That’s not a conference. That’s a corporate holding company.
Texas and Oklahoma are joining the SEC. The **Southeastern** Conference. Because apparently Oklahoma is in the Southeast now. Geography is dead. Tradition is dead. Rivalries that made sense? Dead.
And for what? TV money.
But here’s the thing: **it doesn’t have to be this way.**
We built something better. In NCAA 26. A complete realignment of college football based on one radical idea:
What if conferences were regional? What if geography mattered? What if we built college football the way it should have been built from the start?
We created **10 regional power conferences.** Geographically logical. Competitively balanced. Culturally coherent.
And it’s awesome.
This isn’t just a fun video game experiment. **This is a blueprint.** A proposal for how college football could—and should—reorganize itself.
Here’s how we fix college football.
The Current System Is a Disaster
Let’s be honest about what we have now:
**The Big Ten has 18 teams.** Spanning from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Road trips that require flights across three time zones.
**The SEC is swallowing the sport.** Texas and Oklahoma joining. Sixteen teams. Soon to be more. A superconference eating everything in its path.
**The ACC is dying.** Florida State and Clemson trying to leave. Grant of Rights lawsuits. A conference held together by legal threats.
**The Big 12 is whatever’s left.** BYU, Cincinnati, UCF, Houston. Schools from Utah, Ohio, Florida, and Texas in the same conference. Because why not?
**The Pac-12 literally collapsed.** Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten. USC and UCLA already gone. A conference that existed for over a century, destroyed in two years.
**This is what corporate consolidation looks like.** Two mega-conferences (SEC and Big Ten) controlling everything. Everyone else scrambling for survival. Media deals driving every decision.
**Geography? Tradition? Rivalries?** Who cares. There’s money to be made.
**But here’s the problem:** This isn’t sustainable. And it’s making the sport worse.
Why Regional Conferences Make Sense
**Travel costs.** Flying your volleyball team from Rutgers to UCLA for a Tuesday night game is insane. And expensive.
**Rivalries.** Regional proximity creates natural rivalries. Shared borders. Shared history. Games that matter to the people who live there.
**Recruiting.** Schools recruit regionally. It makes sense for conferences to reflect that.
**Fan engagement.** Fans can actually travel to away games when the conference opponent is a 3-hour drive, not a cross-country flight.
**Cultural coherence.** The South is different from the Midwest. The West Coast is different from the Rust Belt. Regional conferences reflect those differences. They mean something.
**Competitive balance.** Spread the blue bloods across conferences. Every region has power programs. Every conference has drama.
**And most importantly:** It’s **fun.** Regional games feel authentic. They tap into real geographic and cultural identity. People care more when it’s local.
The 10-Conference Regional Realignment
Here’s the full breakdown. **10 conferences. 148 teams.** Every FBS school placed geographically. Balanced. Logical. Ready to go.
(Note: This alignment was built in NCAA 26 based on geographic logic and competitive balance. We’ve added a few key programs like Kansas State, NC State, Miami (FL), and Ohio to complete the picture and ensure all major FBS programs are represented.)
**MOUNTAIN CONFERENCE (14 teams)**
**Region:** Mountain West & Southwest
- Air Force
- Arizona
- Arizona State
- Boise State
- BYU
- Colorado
- Colorado State
- New Mexico
- New Mexico State
- Utah
- Utah State
- UTEP
- Washington State
- Wyoming
**Why it works:** Mountain time zone alignment. Boise State finally in a power conference where they belong. Arizona schools with regional rivals. Colorado back with traditional opponents. Washington State gets natural geographic fit.
**Rivalries:** Utah vs BYU (Holy War). Arizona vs Arizona State (Territorial Cup). Colorado vs Colorado State (Rocky Mountain Showdown). Boise State proving they belong against power programs.
**PACIFIC CONFERENCE (14 teams)**
**Region:** West Coast
- California (Cal)
- Fresno State
- Hawaii
- Nevada
- Oregon
- Oregon State
- Sacramento State
- San Diego State
- San Jose State
- Stanford
- UCLA
- UNLV
- USC
- Washington
**Why it works:** True Pacific Coast conference. California schools with Northwest powers. Natural recruiting territory. Pac-12 core plus Nevada schools and Sac State. Every game feels geographically right.
**Rivalries:** USC vs UCLA (classic). Stanford vs Cal (Big Game). Oregon vs Oregon State (Civil War). Washington vs Oregon. Bay Area rivalries (Stanford, Cal, San Jose State). This is what the Pac-12 should have stayed as.
**OIL COUNTRY CONFERENCE (15 teams)**

- Oklahoma
- Oklahoma State
- Rice
- Sam Houston State
- SMU
- TCU
- Texas
- Texas A&M
- Texas State
- Texas Tech
- Tulsa
- UTSA
**Why it works:** THE ULTIMATE TEXAS CONFERENCE. Every Texas FBS school in one league. Oklahoma schools join their natural rivals. The old Southwest Conference reborn. Football-obsessed region. This would be an absolute war every single year. Highest TV ratings in the country.
**Rivalries:** Texas vs Oklahoma (Red River Showdown). Texas vs Texas A&M (RESTORED – biggest rivalry in the South). Baylor vs TCU (Revivalry). SMU back in the big time. Houston vs Rice. Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State (Bedlam). Every game matters. This conference would be MUST-WATCH.
**GREAT PLAINS CONFERENCE (15 teams)**
**Region:** Great Plains states
- Arkansas
- Arkansas State
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Iowa State
- Kansas
- Kansas State
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Missouri State
- Nebraska
- North Dakota State
- Northern Illinois
- Northwestern
- Wisconsin
**Why it works:** The Big 8/Big 12 heartland restored. Kansas and Kansas State back together (Sunflower Showdown). Agricultural states. Similar cultures. NDSU finally elevated to FBS where they belong (five-time FCS champs). Traditional powers plus hungry newcomers. Cold weather football.
**Rivalries:** Iowa vs Iowa State (Cy-Hawk). Kansas vs Kansas State (Sunflower Showdown). Kansas vs Missouri (Border War restored). Nebraska vs Kansas State. Wisconsin vs Minnesota (Paul Bunyan’s Axe). NDSU comes in and dominates everyone (probably).
**MIDWEST CONFERENCE (12 teams)**
**Region:** Great Lakes / Upper Midwest
- Ball State
- Central Michigan
- Eastern Michigan
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Louisville
- Michigan
- Michigan State
- Notre Dame
- Purdue
- Western Kentucky
- Western Michigan
**Why it works:** The original Big Ten core plus Kentucky programs. Classic Midwest football. Notre Dame finally joins a conference (or stays independent but plays everyone here). Michigan schools together. Indiana schools together. Kentucky programs bridge to the South.
**Rivalries:** Michigan vs Michigan State (Paul Bunyan Trophy). Michigan vs Ohio State (The Game – but wait, they’re in different conferences… could be non-conference protected). Notre Dame vs Michigan. Indiana vs Purdue (Old Oaken Bucket). Louisville vs Kentucky (Governor’s Cup). All the Michigan directional schools battling.
**RUST BELT CONFERENCE (11 teams)**
**Region:** Ohio Valley / Appalachia / Western PA
- Akron
- Bowling Green
- Cincinnati
- Kent State
- Marshall
- Miami (Ohio)
- Ohio
- Ohio State
- Pittsburgh
- Toledo
- West Virginia
**Why it works:** ALL the Ohio schools FINALLY together in one conference. Ohio State gets natural in-state rivals. Pitt and West Virginia back together (Backyard Brawl restored). Working-class football culture. Rust Belt identity. This makes way more sense than Ohio State playing UCLA. Seven Ohio schools battling it out.
**Rivalries:** Ohio State vs Michigan (The Game – protected non-conference rivalry). Pitt vs West Virginia (Backyard Brawl). Cincinnati vs everyone (they’re always tough). Ohio vs Miami (Ohio) (Battle of the Bricks). All the MAC Ohio schools (Akron, Bowling Green, Kent State, Toledo, Ohio) fighting for respect. Marshall bringing that Appalachian toughness.
**SOUTHERN CONFERENCE (16 teams)**
**Region:** Deep South / SEC heartland
- Alabama
- Auburn
- Georgia
- Georgia State
- Georgia Tech
- Jacksonville State
- Kennesaw State
- Louisiana Tech
- Memphis
- Middle Tennessee State
- Mississippi State
- Ole Miss
- Tennessee
- UAB
- UL Monroe
- Vanderbilt
**Why it works:** The core of the old SEC plus Tennessee/Alabama/Georgia programs. This would be an ABSOLUTE BLOODBATH. Football-obsessed region. Every game is war. Best fans in the country. Sixteen teams means you can’t sleepwalk through conference play.
**Rivalries:** Alabama vs Auburn (Iron Bowl). Georgia vs Georgia Tech (Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate). Tennessee vs Alabama (Third Saturday in October). Mississippi State vs Ole Miss (Egg Bowl). Memphis bringing that intensity. UAB vs everyone. This conference is STACKED and every week is a battle.
**GULF CONFERENCE (14 teams)**
**Region:** Gulf Coast
- Florida
- Florida Atlantic
- Florida International
- Florida State
- Georgia Southern
- Louisiana (UL Lafayette)
- LSU
- Miami (FL)
- South Alabama
- Southern Miss
- Troy
- Tulane
- UCF
- South Florida
**Why it works:** Gulf Coast culture and geography. Louisiana football combined with Florida powerhouses. Speed everywhere. Miami back with natural regional rivals. This would instantly be one of the most exciting conferences in the country. Every game features athletes who can run. Sun Belt elevation brings hungry programs into power conference competition.
**Rivalries:** Florida vs Florida State (stays in-conference). Miami vs Florida State (classic rivalry restored). LSU vs Tulane (in-state battle). UCF vs USF (War on I-4). Miami vs Florida (natural state rivalry). Louisiana vs everyone (Ragin Cajuns are scrappy). Troy and South Alabama bringing that Gulf Coast toughness. FAU and FIU (Florida Atlantic/Florida International rivalry).
**ATLANTIC CONFERENCE (15 teams)**
**Region:** Atlantic Seaboard
- Appalachian State
- Charlotte
- Clemson
- Coastal Carolina
- Duke
- East Carolina
- James Madison
- Liberty
- North Carolina
- NC State
- Old Dominion
- South Carolina
- Virginia
- Virginia Tech
- Wake Forest
**Why it works:** Atlantic Coast schools on the actual Atlantic Coast (what a concept!). Tobacco Road is COMPLETE now with all four NC schools (UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest). Carolina rivalries make sense. App State and James Madison elevated from FCS dominance to FBS power conference. Coastal Carolina bringing that fun-and-gun offense.
**Rivalries:** North Carolina vs NC State (finally together!). Clemson vs South Carolina (Palmetto Bowl). Virginia vs Virginia Tech (Commonwealth Cup). Duke vs UNC. NC State vs everyone (Wolfpack mentality). Wake Forest vs everyone (Demon Deacons are always dangerous). App State proving they belong at this level. ECU vs NC State (in-state battle).
**NORTH EAST CONFERENCE (12 teams)**
**Region:** Northeast / New England / Mid-Atlantic
- Army
- Boston College
- Buffalo
- Delaware
- Maryland
- Navy
- Penn State
- Rutgers
- Syracuse
- Temple
- UConn
- UMass
**Why it works:** Northeast identity finally respected. Penn State makes geographic sense here (not flying to Nebraska). Army-Navy together. Boston College back with regional rivals. Rutgers not pretending to be Midwestern. Maryland back with Atlantic neighbors. Delaware elevated from FCS success.
**Rivalries:** Army vs Navy (America’s Game). Penn State vs Pittsburgh (wait, Pitt’s in Rust Belt – make it non-conference). Boston College vs Syracuse. Rutgers vs Temple. Maryland vs everyone. UConn and UMass trying to prove Northeast football matters. Penn State as the conference anchor and powerhouse.
Conference Championships That Actually Matter
Here’s something the current system killed: **conference championships that mean something.**
Right now, the SEC and Big Ten championship games are glorified quarterfinals. Just another hoop to jump through before the playoff. And if you lose? You might still make the playoff anyway if you’re a blue blood.
Conference championships have become optional.
But in a 10-conference system? They become EVERYTHING.
The New Playoff Structure: 10 Champions + 6 At-Large = Pure Drama
**10 automatic bids.** Every conference champion gets in. No committee. No politics. Win your conference, you’re in the playoff.
**6 at-large bids.** For the best teams that didn’t win their conference. Second-place finishes. Tough schedules. Quality losses.
**16-team playoff.** Four rounds. Regional matchups in early rounds. National championship game.
Why This Makes Conference Championships Electric
Every conference title game becomes a playoff elimination game.
Win, and you’re in. Guaranteed. Doesn’t matter what your record is. Doesn’t matter what the committee thinks.
**The Oil Country championship?** Texas vs Oklahoma for a playoff spot. The entire state watching. National implications.
**The Southern championship?** Alabama vs Georgia. Winner gets the automatic bid. Loser has to hope for an at-large.
**The Mountain championship?** Boise State vs Washington. Boise wins their conference, they’re finally in the playoff. No more “they didn’t play anybody” excuses. They won their conference. They’re in.
**Suddenly every conference championship matters.** Win and you’re dancing. Lose and you’re sweating Selection Sunday.
The At-Large Drama
**6 at-large spots.** That’s it. For 138 teams that didn’t win their conference.
Now the committee has something interesting to debate. Not “which four teams deserve it” but “which six runner-ups had the best resumes?”
Did the runner-up in the Southern Conference (say, Tennessee) have a better season than the runner-up in the Pacific Conference (say, USC)?
Did a 10-2 second-place team in the Rust Belt earn it over an 11-1 Oil Country runner-up?
**Strength of schedule suddenly matters again.** Quality losses matter. Competitive balance matters.
And blue bloods don’t get a free pass. You didn’t win your conference? Now you’re competing with everyone else for those 6 spots.
What the Playoff Looks Like
Round 1 (16 teams):
- 10 conference champions (seeded 1-10)
- 6 at-large teams (seeded 11-16)
**Home field advantage for higher seeds in Round 1 and 2.** Campus games. Student sections. Home atmosphere. Reward regular season success.
**Quarterfinals (8 teams):** Neutral sites or higher seeds.
**Semifinals (4 teams):** New Year’s Six bowls.
**Championship:** One game. National title.
The Beauty of This System
**Every conference has hope.** Even the underdog conference champion gets their shot. Cinderella stories become possible again.
**Regional pride.** The Mountain Conference champion representing the West. The Southern Conference champion representing the Deep South. It means something.
**Quality over brand.** Win your conference and you’re in. Name recognition doesn’t matter. ESPN narratives don’t matter. Committee bias doesn’t matter. Just win.
**Multiple paths to the playoff.** Win your conference (automatic). Finish second but have a strong resume (at-large). Earn it on the field, not in a committee room.
**Drama every week.** Every conference game has playoff implications. Lose twice and you probably need to win your conference. Three losses? You’d better win the championship game.
Compare That to What We Have Now
**Current system:** SEC and Big Ten teams get in with two losses and no conference title because “they played a tough schedule.”
**Meanwhile:** A Group of 5 team goes undefeated and gets left out because “they didn’t play anybody.”
**Committee picks winners.** Subjective. Political. Brand-driven. Alabama with two losses gets in over an undefeated Boise State.
**Conference championships optional.** Georgia loses the SEC title game, still makes the playoff. So what was the point of the conference championship?
The 10-Conference System Makes Every Game Matter
**Regular season:** Fight for a conference title shot.
**Conference championship:** Win and you’re in the playoff. Automatic.
**At-large race:** Lose your conference title game but played a tough schedule? You’ve got a shot at one of six spots.
**No team gets left out unfairly.** If you won your conference, you’re in. If you didn’t, you’re competing for an at-large with everyone else who didn’t. Fair. Transparent. Earned on the field.
How This Fixes College Football
**1. Geographic logic.** Every school is in the right place. No more flying volleyball teams across three time zones.
**2. Competitive balance.** Power programs distributed across all 10 conferences. No two-conference monopoly.
**3. Better TV.** Regional games = better ratings. People care about local matchups.
**4. Conference championships matter again.** Win your conference = automatic playoff bid. Every title game is high stakes.
**5. Playoff structure that makes sense.** 10 conference champions + 6 at-large = 16-team playoff. Every conference has a path. Cinderella stories possible.
**6. Tradition restored.** Rivalries make sense again. Regional pride matters. Schools play in their actual geographic/cultural region.
**7. FCS promotions.** Schools like NDSU, Montana, James Madison get elevated to where they belong. Brings new blood and competition.
**8. Lower costs.** Shorter travel = lower expenses. Better for non-revenue sports.
**9. Fan engagement.** Fans can actually attend away games. Builds stronger conference identity.
**10. Recruiting alignment.** Conferences match recruiting territories. Natural fit for players and families.
**11. No more committee bias.** Win your conference, you’re in. No more subjective picks. No more “brand name” advantages.
**12. It’s way more fun.** Regional rivalries are better. Games feel authentic. Conferences mean something. Playoffs are earned, not selected.
How We Make This Happen
**Step 1: Public pressure.** Share this article. Tweet it at NCAA officials. Tag conference commissioners. Tag sports media. Make noise.
**Step 2: Investment groups.** College football is big business. Private equity is circling. Show them this model. Regional conferences = better product = more money.
**Step 3: School presidents.** They’re the ones who vote. Show them the cost savings. The competitive balance. The fan engagement. Make the case.
**Step 4: Media deals.** ESPN, Fox, CBS. Show them regional games rate better. Local matchups = better viewership.
**Step 5: Fan campaigns.** Organize. Alumni groups. Booster clubs. Students. Make your school administrators hear you.
**This is doable.** College football realignment happens constantly. It’s never too late to fix it.
The Alternative
If we don’t do this, here’s what happens:
**SEC and Big Ten become NFL-lite.** 30-team super leagues. Everyone else irrelevant.
**Regional rivalries die.** Geography means nothing. Traditions erased.
**Smaller schools get left behind.** Two-tier system. Haves and have-nots.
**Fans lose interest.** When Maryland plays UCLA in November, nobody cares. When Maryland plays Virginia? Everyone cares.
**The sport becomes corporate slop.** Soulless. Meaningless. Just another product.
We can’t let that happen.
This Started as a Video Game. It Can Become Reality.
We built this in NCAA 26. Because the game lets you realign conferences however you want.
And you know what? **It’s way more fun than the real thing.**
Imagine watching the Oil Country Conference championship. Texas vs Oklahoma. Winner goes to the playoff. The entire state of Texas watching.
Imagine the Southern Conference. Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, Clemson all in the same league. Absolute bloodbath. Every week matters.
Imagine the Mountain Conference. Boise State vs Washington in November. Snow game. Regional pride on the line.
This is what college football should be.
And it can be. If enough people demand it.
Let’s Make This Real
This isn’t just an article. **This is a proposal.**
**To the NCAA:** Here’s your roadmap. Ten conferences. Geographically logical. Competitively balanced. Better for everyone.
**To conference commissioners:** Stop chasing TV money at the expense of the sport. Build something that lasts.
**To school presidents:** Your fans want this. Your alumni want this. Your students want this. Listen to them.
**To investment groups:** You want to pour money into college football? Fund this realignment. Better product = better returns.
**To fans:** Share this. Make noise. Demand better.
We fixed college football in a video game.
Now let’s fix it for real.
